Urgent & Primary Care Centre at PrimeCare - FAQ’s

+ What is an Urgent and Primary Care Centre?

An Urgent and Primary Care Centre provides timely care for non-emergency, but urgent health concerns for patients when they cannot access their family doctor for urgent situations. It also provides access to a family doctor for local patients who do not have a primary care provider. The Centre is intended to fill the gap between doctor’s offices and walk-in clinics, and hospital emergency rooms, and to treat issues such as minor injuries and illnesses.

On September 23rd, the Edmonds Urgent and Primary Care Centre opened at PrimeCare Medical Centre in the Esprit Building: Suite 201, 7315 Edmonds Street in Burnaby. This is a partnership between the PrimeCare Medical group, Burnaby Division of Family Practice and Fraser Health Authority.

The UPCC is now open seven days a week, evenings and weekends:

Monday to Friday: 1700h-2100h Saturday: 1400h-2000h Sunday & Stat Holidays: 1200h-1800h

+ Which services can patients access at an Urgent and Primary Care Centre?

Services provided at an Urgent and Primary Care Centre are similar to those that patients would receive at a doctor’s office or walk-in clinic.

Please note: An Urgent and Primary Care Centre is not an emergency room. It cannot treat patients with serious illnesses or injuries such as broken bones, chest pains or head injuries. Patients with serious conditions should continue to attend their hospital emergency or call 9-1-1.

At the Centre, patients can seek treatment for issues such as:

  • Minor pains: sore throats, ear aches, upset stomach
  • Minor injuries: sprains, small cuts needing stitches
  • Fevers and infections
  • Mental health and substance use counselling

+ What kind of healthcare providers work at the Centre?

The Centre is staffed by Burnaby family physicians, nurses, and allied health providers, and serves local residents who live in Burnaby. Physicians can advise patients of the Centre’s evening and weekend availability, so Burnaby patients can access care after-hours for minor health issues if the offices of Burnaby family physicians are closed or booked. Patients can simply walk in and wait to be seen, provided they live in the Burnaby area and have a condition that can be properly treated by the Centre staff. Patients are seen based on urgency.
